The Scottish Waste Awareness Group was formed in 2000.

SWAG is committed to changing public attitudes and behaviour towards waste.

Our objectives are:

  • To influence the actions individuals can take to deal with waste.
  • To influence the reduction of waste produced in the home.
  • To increase public awareness and encourage positive action with respect to waste generation and management.
  • To increase the level of personal responsibility for waste.
  • To overcome inertia and to promote the 3R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The Steering Group

SWAG is steered by a group on which a broad range of stakeholders are represented. These are the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA), The Chartered Institute of waste management (CIWM), the Community Recycling Network Scotland (CRNS) and lastly, the Recycling Advisory Group for Scotland (RAGS). The group is chaired by John Summers, Director of Keep Scotland Beautiful.
