FOOD MANUFACTURERS IMPROVING ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

Campina, one of Europe’s largest dairy companies, has produced a Corporate Social Responsibility Report , which outlines investments made in recycling water, a 2% energy consumption reduction and an allocation of €6 million for environmental projects.

Other food manufacturers have begun to take similar steps. For example, Fred Sherriff, Vice President of manufacturing technical services for Kraft says:

"Finding ways to reduce energy demand is fully consistent with our drive to achieve efficiencies in all aspects of our business. It is also consistent with our efforts as a responsible corporate citizen to reduce the environmental impact of our operations."

In addition, Unilever have fitted energy reuse facilities in their Coventry distribution centre saving up to 40% of refrigeration costs. This highlights the financial incentives for reducing resource usage.
