Household Waste Kerbside Recycling

Campaign Launch

This campaign began in June 2005.

Letters and leaflets were provided to householders who had previously been provided with paper recycling service in March 2002. The letters and leaflets informed householders of changes to the existing recycling scheme (blue bag for paper collection) to include the provision of an additional bag and two boxes, allowing more materials to be recycled at the kerbside.

Current Scheme Information

Currently 103,000 households throughout Edinburgh have been provided with a blue bag for paper, a 'Salvation Army' bag for textiles, a red box for card, cardboard and drink cartons, and a blue box for glass, cans and tinfoil, as detailed below:

Blue Bag
  • Computer paper
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • All telephone directories

Salvation Army Bag
  • Clothing
  • Towels
  • Sheets
  • Shoes (in pairs)

There are a small number of properties where the vehicle cannot access for collection.

Part of the campaign involves the delivery of leaflets, which provide further details of the scheme. The leaflet aims to answer questions like 'WHO should recycle?', 'WHAT can I recycle?', 'WHY should I recycle?' and 'WHEN can I recycle?'.
