In the period 1975 - 1991 he managed his own company which supplied highly qualified offshore management personnel to the French Elf Aquitaine Oil Group.
In 1989 Gordon diversified his interests to include the setting up of an aluminium can recycling company, Canstock UK Ltd. In 1992 British Alcan appointed Canstock as their only Scottish "Gold Partner" of Alcan Aluminium Cans Recycling. In 1999 Canstock was presented with Scotland's only, and one of the UK's first, aluminium can recycling industry "Achievement Award" for collecting and processing over 80,000,000 post-consumer aluminium cans.
In 1996 Gordon suggested to his partners in the SCORE Environment Trust that they create a new Landfill Tax Credit Scheme compliant Environmental Body. This was done in October and approved by Entrust in December of that year.
