Waste Aware Construction

How To Manage Your Construction Waste On Site

Reduce, reuse, recycle programmes must be site specific.

A ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ waste champion on-site should be responsible for the daily management, monitoring and enforcing of waste and also co-ordinating pickup times with the waste management companies.

Useful Tools

The SMARTWasteTM System

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) have developed the SMARTWaste (Site Methodology to Audit, Reduce and Target Waste) system for a step-by-step evaluation of waste and its generation.

SMARTWaste is a web-based selection of integrated tools that can be applied to any waste generating activity, and has already been adapted and used for the construction, demolition, refurbishment, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries.

The system has four core tools which are SMARTStart (simple overview), SMARTAudit (detailed audit), SMARTStart+ (performance measurement) and BREMAPTM (resource exchange).
