Waste Aware Lothian & Borders

West Lothian Kerbside Recycling Scheme

Thanks to the efforts of residents of West Lothian, vast amounts of cans, card, paper, plastic bottles and garden waste have been collected and recycled into new products.

The participating households recycled 128 collection vehicles of household waste in September 2004 alone.

44,000 households are currently served by the scheme with households in Pumpherston, Uphall Station, Mid and East Calder, Kirknewton and Wilkieston being added to the scheme on the 29th November 2004.

WHO can recycle?

The Scottish Waste Awareness Group, through the 'Waste Aware Scotland' programme is working towards changing current public attitudes and behaviour towards domestic waste.

We are working in partnership with West Lothian Council to encourage public participation in the new kerbside recycling scheme. The success of this scheme is dependent on YOUR participation.

Details of how to use the kerbside collection scheme are outlined below:
WHAT can I recycle?

It is important that only the correct materials go into your BLUE bin as this makes the sorting process easier.

The following items are accepted in your BLUE bin:

  • Cans (aluminium & steel) – this includes all food and drinks cans.
  • Paper – such as magazines, newspapers, office paper and white telephone directories. Please do not include Yellow Pages or envelopes, as these cannot be recycled by the same process.
  • Light card – such as cereal boxes and other clean food packaging.
  • Plastic bottles – PET and HDPE plastic bottles are accepted in the blue bin. Below are the symbols for PET and HDPE plastic. These symbols are commonly marked on plastic bottles to help you identify them.

It is important that only the correct materials go into your BROWN bin to ensure that good quality compost is produced.

The following items are accepted in your BROWN bin:

  • Coffee grounds & tea bags
  • Egg shells
  • Garden waste – including:
  • Flowers & plants
  • Garden weeds
  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge clippings
  • Leaves & bark
  • Small branches
  • Straw & twigs
  • Uncooked fruit & vegetable waste

The GREY bin should be used for other waste that cannot be recycled using your BLUE or BROWN bins.

WHY should I recycle?

After your recyclates are collected they are sorted and reprocessed to make new products.

  • Cans are taken to Eden Recycling to be sorted and baled, then sent to reprocessors to be recycled into new cans, sheet metal and building materials.
  • Paper and card are taken to Eden Recycling to be sorted and baled, then sent to paper mills to be recycled into a variety of new paper and card products.
  • Plastic Bottles are taken to Eden Recycling, then sent to reprocessors to be recycled into new plastic products, such as garden furniture.
  • Garden Waste is taken to the Council's composting facility and the compost produced is used for landscaping in West Lothian.
WHEN can I recycle?

The calendar supplied with your recycling bins, as part of the information leaflet, shows the weeks when your BLUE, BROWN and GREY bins are collected.

If you would like to receive a copy of the information leaflet, please contact us or call West Lothian Council’s recycling hotline on 01506 777 810.

  • Blue bin (every 4 weeks)
  • Brown bin (every 4 weeks)
  • Grey bin (fortnightly)

This means that you put one bin out on the kerbside for collection each week. Please put your bin out by 7am on your collection day with the lid closed and the handles facing the kerb.
