SWAG

The Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) was set up in 2000, with the remit of changing public attitudes to domestic waste. We have cross sector support with representatives from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA), Community Recycling Network Scotland (CRNS), Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB), Recycling Advisory Group for Scotland (RAGS), Scottish Executive, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) on our steering group. The Group is chaired by John Summers, the Director of KSB, and is funded by the Scottish Executive and SEPA.

The aim of SWAG is to deliver a national campaign called Waste Aware Scotland, to raise awareness of, and change public attitudes and behaviour towards Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The campaign is delivered in parallel with the implementation phase of the National Waste Plan for Scotland.

The objectives of SWAG are:

  • To influence the actions individuals can take to deal with waste.
  • To influence the reduction of waste produced in the home.
  • To increase public awareness and encourage positive action with respect to waste generation and management.
  • To increase the level of personal responsibility for waste.
  • To overcome inertia and to promote the 3R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
