Glass: there are glass Recycling Points around the islands. At present, the glass is taken to Alloa for reprocessing. However, this is expensive due to road haulage and shipping costs, making it economically non-viable. Orkney Islands Council is currently looking into cheaper local options. Paper: there is a monthly kerbside collection for paper and cardboard in Orkney, and also paper Recycling Points around the islands. Metals: there are Recycling Points for cans around the islands. Aluminium cans are collected for reprocessing by Charities Aid Recycling Enterprise (CARE) and steel cans are baled at Chinglebraes and then sent to the Scottish mainland for reprocessing. Scrap metal can be taken to a local scrap merchant or collected by the Council when requested. Green Waste: Green waste can be taken to Recycling Centres or composted at home. Green cones for home composting are provided by the Council to households outwith mainland Orkney. Textiles: can be taken to local charity shops.
