Waste Aware Highland

Highland: Introduction

This Waste Strategy Area consists of the area covered by Highland Council.

In 2002/2003, a total of 3,659 tonnes* of household waste was recycled by this area.

RoWAN Seminar
On the 7th of September 2004, David Gunn and Will Myles from the SWAG team attended the RoWAN seminar. RoWAN is a community action project aiming to encourage people to minimise their household waste. 100 volunteers took part in the first year of this project with an aim to becoming as waste free as possible.

This seminar was held to present the results of 12 months of hard work to interested parties. Sheila Wickens, Project Coordinator, announced the success of the project with most households able to reduce their waste significantly. A draft version of the project findings was distributed to all attendees to allow feedback with the final version available in the near future. One of the volunteers presented her side of the experience, pointing towards some successes and lessons learnt. The Waste Free Households project will be rolled out to a further 1000 volunteers following a Highland Council bin route. Significant funding has been secured and more is being pursued.

For more information on the project please contact Shiela Wickens, tel: 01349 855 228.
