Inverurie celebrates Environment Day

A major environmental awareness event will take place in the town centre of Inverurie on Saturday, July 24.

“Environment Day is both a celebration of our environment and a shop window full of ideas and advice on how to lead an eco-friendly life-style,” explained Ranald Allan, chairman of the event organisers, Inverurie Environmental Improvement Group.

The event has attracted more than 25 exhibitors ranging from local groups like the town’s Horticultural Society to national organisations like Keep Scotland Beautiful.

“The response has been fantastic,” said Mr Allan. “The stalls will provide information and advice but there is also a fun element with competitions for the whole family.”

Re-cycling will be featured on a number of stalls and there will be an opportunity for visitors to purchase home composting kits at a special 'on the day' price.

“There are a few simple steps people can take to lead an environmentally friendly lifestyle,” explained the IEI chairman. “If everyone does a little then this can add up to a significant reduction in domestic waste, energy use and air pollution.

“At Environment Day the public will learn how to make their gardens more attractive to birds, how to recycle supermarket containers for garden use and how to save household energy costs.

“Another key message is the protection of our natural heritage and Keep Scotland Beautiful, the Baillies of Bennachie and the Countryside Rangers will be promoting this and explaining how everyone can play their part.”

The event will be opened by Aberdeenshire Provost and Inverurie councillor Raymond Bisset. Inverurie MSP Nora Radcliffe and the chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, John Summers, will also be on the platform to welcome visitors.

The event will run from 11am to 4pm and refreshments will be available throughout the day in Inverurie Town Hall with catering by Inverurie’s Fly Cup. Inverurie has ample parking within 150 yards approximately of the event.

Inverurie Environmental Improvement Group is made-up of representatives from Inverurie Business Association, Inverurie Community Council, The Rotary Club of Inverurie and local providers of day care services for older and disabled people and supported by Aberdeenshire Council.
