Grampian Recycling Centres and Points Campaign Launch

Scotland’s biggest-ever drive to encourage the use of Recycling Centres and Points is underway in Grampian.

Highlighting 230 recycling locations across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, the ‘Waste Aware Grampian’ campaign is one of a series of waste awareness initiatives throughout Scotland.

Waste Aware Grampian has been developed by the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) - in partnership with Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and Moray Council. Similar campaigns are planned throughout Scotland, in an effort to reduce landfill from the estimated 2.6m tonnes of waste produced every year by Scottish households.

A national survey of more than 5000 Scots has shown that most people are keen to recycle, but 42% of those interviewed in Grampian said they didn’t know where their recycling facilities were. In response, as part of Waste Aware Grampian, the campaign highlights the locations of 230 Recycling Centres and Points throughout Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

Launching the campaign, Nora Radcliffe MSP for Gordon, and a member of the Scottish Executive’s Environment Committee, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the people of the North East to demonstrate their commitment to the environment. The recycling facilities are now within easy access from all parts of the region and it only takes a moment of thoughtfulness to make all the difference.”

The Waste Aware Grampian Recycling Centres and Points campaign is an educational and promotional campaign, which includes press, TV, radio and billboard advertising, urging people to recycle cans, glass, paper and textiles.

SWAG campaign manager, Dr Nicki Souter says throughout Grampian, people have shown a real willingness to recycle: “The clear message we have had from Scots is that they want to help, but often don’t know how. Along with other forthcoming campaigns in Scotland, Waste Aware Grampian is designed to ensure that people have all the information they need.”

Ian Yuill, Convenor of Aberdeen City Council’s Environment and Infrastructure Committee, added “This campaign could kickstart the way we deal with our growing mountain of waste. It has enormous potential benefits for both our environment and our economy. Until now, we have lagged behind many of our European neighbours when it comes to recycling but hopefully, that situation is about to change for the better”
