Waste Aware Aberdeenshire: Pilot Dry Recyclate Kerbside Collection Scheme

Thanks to the efforts of the 8000 householders in Stonehaven and Portlethen, vast amounts of cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and paper have been collected and recycled into new products.  Those participating in the scheme now recycle almost 20% of their waste.

Please continue to help us get it sorted.

Approximately 8000 households in Stonehaven and Porlethen were provided with a green box and a white bag for recycling dry recyclates in June 2004.

WHAT can I recycle?

YOU can recycle the following items in your GREEN BOX:

  • Food and drinks cans (rinse)
  • Glass bottles and jars (remove lids and rinse)
  • Plastic bottles (all kinds - remove lids rinse and flatten where possible)

Please DO NOT use plastic bags as they make the sorting process more difficult.

Your GREEN BOX has a divider which you can use to help separate some of the materials if you wish.

YOU can recycle the following items in your WHITE BAG:

  • Catalogues & brochures
  • Leaflets
  • Newspapers & magazines
  • Office paper

Please DO NOT put the following items in your WHITE BAG:

  • Cardboard
  • Envelopes
  • Plastic Wrappers
  • Telephone directories
  • Yellow Pages

These cannot be recycled through the same process, so should not be included.

WHEN can I recycle?

Your green box and white bag will be collected fortnightly.

Please place your green box (with the lid securely fastened to prevent it blowing away) at the kerbside where you would normally leave your household waste for collection.  Place your white bag out on top or alongside the green box.  These should be put out by 7.30 am on your collection day.

WHY should I recycle?

Recycling your waste saves the Earth's natural resources and energy.  It also reduces the risk of global warming and the need for landfill. After your recyclates are collected they are recycled into other products such as new cans, glass containers, packaging, plastic pipes and newsprint.
