Aberdeen City - Dry Recyclates Kerbside Collection Scheme

87% of people living in Aberdeen City want to recycle at home.

Aberdeen City has started a new fortnightly kerbside collection scheme. The collection scheme currently allows 40,000 households in the city to recycle cans, glass, plastic bottles, cardboard and paper on their doorstep. The scheme will be phased in over the next few years to cover most of the city.

The households will be provided with a BLACK BOX to recycle cans, glass and plastic bottles and a WHITE BAG for cardboard and paper. A guide insert giving more information about the scheme and detailing information dates will also be sent to all households when they are included in the scheme.

Currently households are issued with one black box and one white bag. Families with five or more in the household can request additional containers. For more information please refer to your Waste Aware Grampian guide, call 01224 52 33 10, email wasteaware@aberdeencity.gov.uk or visit www.aberdeencity.gov.uk.

WHAT can I recycle?

It is important that only the correct recyclates (materials that can be recycled) go into your black box as this makes the sorting process easier.

BLACK BOX
You can recycle the following materials in your black box:

  • Cans (aluminium and steel)
  • Glass (bottles & jars)
  • Plastic bottles (all types)

Please rinse all items, remove all bottle lids and flatten plastic bottles.

WHITE BAG
You can recycle the following materials in your white bag:
  • Cardboard (clean)
  • Paper (all types)

Please flatten cardboard and remove envelope windows.

WHEN can I recycle?

Please ensure that your black box and white bag are out on the kerbside by 7.30am on your collection day. The collection day varies depending on where you live. A guide insert detailing the collection dates has been distributed to each household in the kerbside collection area. If you haven’t received one, please contact WasteAware@aberdeencity.gov.uk or telephone 01224 52 33 10.

WHY should I recycle?

Recycling saves energy and resources and prevents the need for landfill. This can help prevent global warming. After your recyclates are collected they are sorted and reprocessed.

Cans are taken to Warrington & Aberdeen scrap merchants, where they are sorted, cleaned and baled to be recycled into new cans.

Plastic bottles are baled and sent to Preston where they are recycled to make products like new plastic bottles, compost bins and garden furniture.

Glass bottles and jars are taken to Alloa, where they are cleaned and crushed. They are then recycled to make new glass bottles and jars.

Paper & cardboard are bulked and taken to Mugiemoss & Shotten, where they are recycled to make a variety of products such as newsprint, tissue and paperboard.
