Argyll & Bute: Area Waste Plan As part of the National Waste Strategy: Scotland, each Waste Strategy Area has gone through a process which has resulted in the formulation of an Area Waste Plan. This Area Waste Plan is the way in which the Waste Strategy Area plans to deal with its waste in order to meet the targets set out in the EC Landfill Directive and to develop more sustainable methods of waste management. Following is a short summary of the process that was undergone in Argyll & Bute: 2001: The Draft Area Waste Plan Argyll and Bute produced a draft Area Waste Plan in August 2001, which is available at www.sepa.org.uk/nws/areas.
Argyll and Bute Draft Area Waste Plan The plan has two stages:
This means that householders will be asked to separate their recyclates at home. For example separating recyclates like glass, paper, cans etc. from the rest of your waste and eventually separating each material individually. This takes a small amount of time, and will help Argyll and Bute achieve the targets set out in the Landfill Directive. This cannot be done without your help. Some household waste is harmful to the environment - cleaning products, batteries, medicines and so on. It is hoped that these will eventually collected and dealt with separately. This is to ensure that when the remainder of the waste is recycled, composted or used to produce energy, the products will be cleaner and safer.
Once the draft plan has been approved, a final version of the plan will be produced and set in motion. Waste Aware Scotland is working with the Area Waste Group to promote awareness of the waste issue in Argyll and Bute, and to help people to Reduce Reuse Recycle their waste. If
